Traveller's tips

People

Ghana is a peaceful West African country with open minded and friendly people, English language is spoken widely and most people are Christians. There are may Gospel churches around Accra. Many people also confess themselves to the traditional religions and some are Muslims. You can feel free to dress as you like. There are usually no problems to take pictures, but of course you should ask before photographing people.

Money

The Ghanaian currency is called Cedis. Bring along US dollars, Euros or travellers cheques to change at local exchange bureaus or bank offices. Credit cards tend to work only to a limited extent. There are a few cash dispenser machines in Accra, but they are not that many and easy to find, and they do not take all kind of cards. A Visa-card works in most machines. You can normally withdraw the equivalent of  around 100-300 Euros per day. You cannot carry Cedis when you leave the country.

Visa

In order to travel to Ghana, you need a Visa that you can apply for at the Ghanaian Embassies. It is usually quite fast (1-2 weeks), but it is still recommended to apply well in time before departure. When applying for a Visa, and upon arrival in Ghana, you will have to present two references in Ghana, with name and addresses.
